READ THE SCRIPT

  • Panel 1: Close-up shot of a fly sitting on a car dashboard.

    • Character: Fly

    • FX: bzzzzzzz

Panel 2: Zoom out, wide shot, we can see from Naomi’s POV in the driver seat. We see the dashboard and the fly sitting placidly on it. Naomi’s hands grip the steering wheel. The panel cuts off at her forearms. She is wearing long black sleeves. Through the windshield, an extended freeway and an endless trail of black cars can be seen.

    • Characters: Fly, Naomi

    • FX: zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Panel 3: White text on black background. It acts as a transition between panels.

    • Caption: 105 degrees.

Panel 4: Zoom out, we can see the back of Naomi’s seat, her shoulder/arm, and the car dash. Naomi’s right arm and hand are extended, swatting at the fly, missing it. The fly hovers above the dash, avoiding Naomi’s hand.

    • Characters: Fly, Naomi

    • FX:

      • FWIP

      • zzzzzzzzzz

Panel 5: White text on black background. Acts as a transition between panels.

    • Caption: That’s how disgustingly hot it is in this tedious town.

Panel 6: Close-up, ¾ view, outside of Naomi’s open car window. The background behind the car is blurry to indicate motion. The fly drifts lazily through the half-rolled-down window.

    • FX: zzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Panel 7: Wide shot, eye level, columns of cars stopped in traffic (as if from POV of someone standing between the rows of cars and looking down the dividing line between lanes). The fly has flown farther away from Naomi’s half-rolled window, moving toward the edge of the panel. The fly is closer to the POV and larger than in previous panels as if attempting to fly off the page.

    • FX: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Panel 8: White text on black background.

    • Caption: But it’s not just the heat. It’s the way the air lingers.

Panel 9: Black background with a single small image of the fly on the left, as if resting on the reader’s screen. The fly is roughly the center distance between the text in panels 8 and 10.

    • Character: Fly

Panel 10: White text on black background.

    • Caption: It pulses, as if with breath.

Panel 11: White text on black background.

    • Caption: The knotted roads—the little cars, the way they crawl up and down the twisted tarmac like fat, black beetles.

Panel 12: Bird’s eye view, a tangle of black highway roads jammed with cars. The roads are sprawling, clustered, and nonsensical in design. They are stacked on top of each other and more condensed in the center, feathering outward like threads of a cobweb.

    • FX: zzzzzzzzzzz

Panel 13: White text on black background.

    • Caption: The people…

Panel 14: Closeup, a smiling Polaroid photograph of Lola, a young adult with wavy, shoulder-length blond hair. Conventionally pretty. Beauty mark on the corner of her lip. Her eyes are censored by a black bar.

    • Character: Lola

Panel 15: White text on black background.

    • Caption:

Panel 16: White text on black background.

    • Caption: I know there is something in the epicenter of all this—

Panel 17: White text on black background.

    • Caption: Something honey-thick with misery.

Panel 18: A golden, viscous liquid drips down, pooling around a nondescript figure curled in a fetal position, coated in the viscous liquid.

  • Panel 19: White text on black background.

    • Caption: It was a dizzy, drudging summer—the summer that Lola slipped on wet tile and died

Panel 20: Wide shot, low angle, looming view of the back of a traditional chapel, surrounded by sparse trees and foliage. There is no one in sight. The church is made of white horizontal planks. At the top of the chapel roof sits a cross. It’s a cloudy day. There is a visible black sedan haphazardly parked in the lot.

Panel 21: White text on black background.

    • Description: And I don’t know what I was doing.

Panel 22: Close-up, Naomi’s left hand—loosely clenched, palm-side up—holding a cigarette between her index and middle finger. POV as if she’s looking down at her hand. Blurry gravel in the background.

    • Characters:  Naomi

    • Fx:  sssssss

Panel 23: White text on black background.

    • Caption:  I wanted to see her face again. I feared that I would sink back into that grey, aimless place.

Panel 24: Side view, Naomi’s profile, her head tilted back. She’s leaned against the outer wall of the church. She’s exhaling cigarette smoke through her lips. Her eyes are covered by Naomi’s straight, wispy blunt bangs. She has long, straight, hair pulled back in a low ponytail.

    • Characters: Naomi

    • Fx:  huuuuu

Panel 25: Continuance of panel 23, remains in profile view. Can see Naomi’s neck, shoulders, and torso. The panel stops at the top of her skirt. She’s wearing a black, flimsy slip dress with a black blazer layered on top. It’s an odd combination as if she doesn’t have any other black clothing that can pass as formalwear. Under her left arm is tucked a bouquet of white lilies. The bouquet is tucked backward, with the stems pinned under her arm and the heads of the flowers behind her, brushing the wall.

    • Characters: Naomi

    • Fx:  CRUNCH

Panel 29: Medium close-up, Naomi tucking a lock of hair behind her left ear. She’s standing in front of the white plank wall. She’s looking down slightly, a neutral expression on her face. Someone speaks from off-panel.

Panel 34: Extreme closeup, front-view, Naomi’s mouth and some of her jaw and neck as she bites her nails on her left hand. (almost looks like a continuance of panel 32, mostly aligned, so it looks like almost a composition of her full face with her nose/cheeks covered by panel 33)

    • Characters:  Naomi, Gossip

      • Gossip: She’s supposed to be here today

      • Gossip: Poor thing.

    • Fx:  CRKKKKK—

Panel 37: Close-up, POV as if she’s looking down at the hand, we see Naomi’s left forearm/hand as something snatches it away from her mouth. Her fingers are splayed out, giving away her surprise. A man’s hand is gripping her wrist, the appendage seeming to emerge from the darkness with only the fingers visible.

    • Characters:  Naomi, Earl

    • Dialogue: Ah

    • Fx:  FWIP

Panel 38: Extreme close-up of Naomi’s eye, wide with surprise, looking down/right off-panel.

    • Characters:  Naomi

Panel 61: Close-up, high angle, of one of the women sitting in the pews, staring at her as she walks by. It’s a woman in her 50’s, with chin-length hair done in a coiffed fashion. She’s wearing pearl earrings and a black sweater.

Panel 70: White text on black background.

    Caption:  Lola?
